Tool recommendations.

Finding ways to make scrappy work look polished is something I accidentally specialize in, since I’ve been relying on free and affordable online resources since my days as the senior editor at volunteer-run magazine Paper Darts. I’m collecting some of my favorites here so you can use them too!

Anchor

Anchor is a podcast platform. Its services are pretty robust, but the only thing I’ve personally used it for is creating animated videos to share audio content on social. Similar service: Wavve.co.

Canva

Go-to graphic design platform for folks who can’t afford Adobe software. You’ll realize once you log in that you’ve seen a lot of their social media templates before, so I recommend using them as a starting point and then applying your own look.

Contrast Ratio

Easy shortcut to determine whether your text and background colors meet minimum legibility requirements. You want 4.5:1 or better.

Hunter

A Chrome extension that helps you piece together contact email information that’s hidden in websites.

Kapwing

A video editor that basically does it all. The free version has a huge suite of tools, and the only “catch” is you can’t go back and edit content that you finished more than 5 days ago. Pay up to get access to all the content you’ve ever made.

Lnk.Bio

Stop using Linktree. Lnk.Bio’s free tool is way better looking and more robust. You can get a bunch of extra features for a one-time payment of $9.99.

Milkshake

Milkshake is a free app that lets you build a simple website on your phone in minutes. It was designed to be a better ‘link in bio’ option for Instagram users.

Otter

The Otter AI makes live transcriptions of interviews, meetings, lectures, and other voice conversations. After your recording is done, you can listen to the audio and manually edit notes within the tool.

Paletton

No, not the bike people. Paletton is a color scheme designer that helps me chase my love of power clashing graphics with 0 prior knowledge of color theory.

Pixelbuddha

There are a lot of websites out there that provide free design assets, but Pixelbuddha is my favorite. Most of their resources come with several file versions of each asset so they mesh with everything from Photoshop to Procreate to Canva.

remove.bg

There are lots of design tools that let you manually clip backgrounds from images, but the remove.bg AI does an impeccable job without all the personal suffering. You get one free use per month, otherwise credits are $1/image.

SimilarWeb

Get a look at any website’s traffic statistics. I use this to help me compare the popularity of media sites I’m pitching to, to determine where I might get the best return on my time.

Smartmockups

A mockup generator that lets you slap an image of your choice onto a mug, phone, t-shirt, business card, etc. A mix of free and paid mockups.

UNUM

Handy social media planning tool for Instagram and TikTok. I found this when I was trying to plan out a grid before I had the account started. The first step on most other planning apps was to sync an existing account, but UNUM lets you start from scratch.
